The difference between an Air Conditioner & an Evaporative Air Cooler

One of the differences between the two are the methods used to produce cool air; air conditioning or evaporation. An Portable Evaporative Air Cooler has cool air that feels like an ocean breeze. A Portable Air Conditioner produces dry cool air like you feel in an properly air conditioned vehicle. People in dry climates most generally prefer an Evaporative Cooler and those in humid areas generally choose Air Conditioned air (like our "ice models").

Both systems are preferred to cool people in a specific area; for example 'spot cooling'. They can be moved from place to place, thereby eliminating the need to expend vast amounts of energy to cool a large area. Portable Evaporative Coolers save not only energy, but also money. You may have central air of some type, however it could be set at a higher temperature to save energy, while using Portable Evaporative Coolers for Spot Cooling.

The following question was taken from our FAQ Section

1. How Large an Area will a Portable Evaporative Cooler cool?

Seems like a logical question, however Portable Cooling Systems are typically designed for Spot Cooling, not area cooling. We do not know if the area to be cooled is well insulated or if it is cool to begin with or if there is enough power and other resources to maintain a full power-on situation. It does not matter if you are using a Portable Evaporative Cooler System in an auditorium or a phone booth. Size does not make any difference because you will place the Portable device where you need it! That is the advantage of Portable Evaporative Cooler Systems.

We always recommend you install properly sized refrigerated central systems if you are not limited to either energy or financial resources. However if you are limited to either or both resources, then consider Portable Spot Cooling by using an Evaporation Cooler! These systems work well unless you need to cool the pictures on the walls or all the people in a vehicle; in which case you must install a properly sized permanently mounted central system.

The bottom line: If there is no limit on resources install a properly sized built-in cooling device. If, on the other hand, there are limited resources of energy and/or finances utilize a Portable Evaporative Cooling System to provide that needed relief from the heat! Our Portable Evaporative Coolers are strong enough to blow the papers off your desk, yet much quieter than most TV commercials! More Answers on this subject.

What are the Dimensions, Amperage Draw and Water Capacity?

One gallon (3.75 liters) of water will last around two to three hours in the daytime and four to five hours during the night when used for evaporative cooling in dry desert climates. The "Ice Water" models are capable of using from 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) up to 20 pounds (9.0 kilograms) of ice per hour, or more, depending on the ambient temperature and day or night operation.

A 105 Deep Cycle battery, "not being charged", allow the MW1, MW2 to operate for 50 to 80 hours and the "Ice Water" models like the MK3, MK4, MAC & M400 will operate for 25 to 35 hours before the battery needs charging. The Swampy Models will operate about 8 hours before the battery would need charging as they draw more energy.

Evaporative Cooler Models typically use Water only & the Model AC 12 uses Ice only
The M200, M400, MK3, MK4, MAC, MG3, & IM30 Provide; Dual Air Conditioning using Ice or Water
All Dual Systems automatically dispose of the excess condensation collected
